Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)

These define the cooperative framework between the SPTO and other national offices in aspects such as training, technical assistance, the exchange of best practices, the exchange of examiners, etc.

The SPTO has signed Memorandums of Understanding with the following national offices:

  • With Ibero-American offices: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Uruguay.
  • With other offices: China, Korea, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Turkey and Ukraine.

Exchange of examiners:

Patent examiners are at the forefront of the patent system and are responsible for evaluating whether the most recent technological innovations, described in patent applications, are sufficiently novel and inventive. It is a job which requires specialised technical knowledge as well as an understanding and in-depth knowledge of patent legislation. The purpose of these exchanges is to improve the knowledge and skills of the examiners, as well as to learn about the best practices and tools of other offices.

The SPTO has carried out the following exchanges:

- SPTO examiner exchanges to National Offices: Morocco and Israel

- Other National Office examiner exchanges to the SPTO: China, Morocco, Japan and Korea
